This week in year 2 we have been concentrating on the expanded method of column addition. Firstly we focused on setting out the numbers correctly into our books; making sure that there was only one digit in each square, giving each column the correct heading of T for tens and U for units. Next we added up the units and placed the answer in the units column. If the sum was over 10 then we used the tens column to show this. Afterwards, we added up the tens column and then added up both totals to solve the answer! Some of us even got on to adding up hundreds which really encouraged us to think of place value and what the numbers stood for. We then linked column addition to money, adding in pounds and pence.
