It was a delight to welcome back the children on Tuesday and my how they have all grown! Everyone has settled into their new Year 2 classrooms really well and they have returned to school with a sensible and mature attitude for this important year.
We started the week by writing a recount of the adventures they got up to over the summer. The children loved telling each other all about the fun they had and explain who, what, where, when and why in their sentences. We then moved on to looking at our class story ‘A Dark, Dark, Take’ by Ruth Brown. We will be learning this story in great detail so we can innovate it an make our own versions next week.
In Maths we have been looking at place value and partitioning (splitting up) numbers into tens and units in different ways. We were pleased that lots of the children remembered and applied their learning from Year 1 to solve the problems. Our homework relates to the work we undertook this week in class and we will be continuing to look at place value next week.
Everyone was happy to hear that our first topic is Castles. Many children could tell us lots of information about castles and they all had lots of interesting questions that they wish to investigate the answers to over the half term. Learning began with identifying the different parts of a castle. The children were able to explain what each part was and why it was important to the running of the castle.
Next week we will be learning the following:
- Retelling ‘A Dark, Dark Tale’ by Ruth Brown and innovating it.
- Using place value (tens and units) to partition and solve problems.
- Who lives in a castle and why?
- Properties of different materials.
- How to stay safe online.
Year 2’s P.E. day is Tuesday. Please ensure that children come to school in their plain P.E. kit on this days, dressed appropriately for the weather. Long hair should be tied back and earrings are removed.
Homework is sent out on a Friday and should be returned for the following Thursday. The spelling test will take place on Thursday morning.
Have a lovely weekend
