This week we continued our history topic and moved on from the plague to the fire of London. The children have been captivated by this and have learned with such verve and enthusiasm this week! Our timelines were superb.
In English we used our knowledge of the fire of London to compose compound sentences and chose time words to order and explain reasons for the events in 1666. The children are trying very hard to compose sentences verbally before they write them. We encourage that they read every sentence to check it makes perfect sense. The children’s phonic knowledge is increasing week by week and they are able to use the sounds they use to read to build the words they write.
In maths we focused on fractions – we have been halving objects, shapes and numbers. The children are building up their knowledge and ended the week using the divide sign to halve numbers. Super work! Next week we will be moving on to quarters.
Our topic of Buddhism continued this week and the children learned that the lotus flower and the eight spoke Dharma wheel are important symbols for Buddhists.
In PE we have started to rehearse our dance for the Dance Festival coming soon. We are also working on throwing, catching and target skills with balls and beanbags.
We have a very busy and exciting week ahead planned. Amongst other things, we will be:
– Writing a diary about the fire of London.
– Finding quarters of objects, shapes and numbers.
– Building Tudor style houses out of cardboard boxes. Please send any boxes you have to school!
Year One PE is on Friday. Children will need to come to school in their plain uniform PE kits.
