In the lead up to our science unit on plants, we all waited for potatoes to start to chit before planting them in our Year 1 raised beds just before Easter.
Over the last few months, we have done our best to look after them and have watched them grow. As soon as they started to flower and the leaves turned yellow, we knew it was time to dig them up which we did earlier in the week before cleaning them.
This morning, we learned two new techniques for safely cutting vegetables, ‘the claw’ and ‘the bridge’, and we used them to chop our potatoes into the ideal shape for roasting. Ask us to show you our cutting methods at home the next time you need anything chopped!
Mrs Weaver and the kitchen team then offered to help us to roast our potatoes in a little oil before we added some seasoning and thoroughly enjoyed eating them. We learned that food that you’ve grown yourself always tastes the best.
Some of the children in Year 1 were then able to go around the school and offer our roasties to all of the adults around the building while telling the children in other year groups the process we had gone through. We had comments like: “The best roast potatoes I’ve ever had!”, “Ten out of ten!”, “Would you come round to my house to make them for my Sunday dinner!” and “Two thumbs up!”. All of the children in Puffins and Penguins are so proud of what we’ve produced.
