Year 1 have been super scientists by carrying out an investigation to see which objects float and which sink. The children made a prediction before testing each object using their knowledge of materials. It was really interesting when some of the children’s pencils sank but others floated on top of the water. Not all of the pencils were the same so it generated a lot of discussion about the type of material the pencils were covered in as well as the shape of the pencils. We then looked at the shape of boats and ships and why ships made from metal are able to float on water.
